Movie #3 2020: Long Shot (2019)

Seth Rogen as Fred Flarsky and Charlize Theron as Charlotte Field

What a welcoming surprise! This is a movie I only watched because my girlfriend stumbled upon it on Netflix on the off-chance.

For real, this is the first movie that truly surprised me by how much I enjoyed it. Whilst I was expecting your run-of-the-mill Seth Rogen weed-infused rom-com à la Knocked Up, Long Shot was much more intelligent and aware of current affairs.

I had many a laugh throughout this one, specifically the scene in which Theron‘s character took MDMA for the first time and was unexpectedly pulled into a meeting with a world leader over Skype. Comedy gold, if you ask me.

This may be the first time I’ve considered a movie a true dramedy in that you usually get a lot of either drama or comedy, but this one was truly equal parts of both. Much funnier than a drama, but much more dramatic than a comedy, there was positively a perfect balance here.

Long Shot‘s supporting cast was filled with stars including Lisa Kudrow, but it was Grace & Frankie‘s June Diane Raphael who really stole the show this time. She’s been on my radar for quite some time, and she’s brilliant in every role I’ve seen her in.

Will I ever watch this again? Nope. Would I recommend? A big, fat YES.
