Movie #13 2020: The Terminal (2004)

Tom Hanks as Viktor Navorski

After the mind-bending, overwhelmingly complex task of attempting to review Parasite… YAY! It’s Tom Hanks in the lovingly corny The Terminal from 2004.

Honestly, I don’t think I’d even heard of this movie before I watched it, but it was super delightful nonetheless.

Yes, it’s very, very cheesy at points. But it also stars a post-Chicago Catherine Zeta Jones so what do you expect?!

What Steven Spielberg does well every single time is leave your heart feeling warm, and The Terminal is absolutely no different. What’s actually impressive about this particular Spielberg outing however, is that this movie clearly had a relatively low budget in comparison to many of his other movies. (Particularly Ready Player One). This is a film that pretty much has only two locations throughout the entire thing, yet it still somehow feels so special. That’s the Spielberg magic, I guess.

As usual, Stanley Tucci is an utter chameleon. In this, he’s the supposed ‘bad guy’, but he’s just so brilliant I can’t help but love him. As for Tom Hanks? Of course, perfect in every way. Do I care that his Eastern European accent is a little bit off? Nope. Because he’s from a fictional country so who cares? Also, he’s Tom Hanks, so he can do what he wants.

No, this isn’t a movie I’ll watch again, nor is it Spielberg’s best. But it’s a truly heart-warming and wholesome family film with apt dramatic twists that will keep you entertained throughout it’s run-time on a rainy day.
