I definitely said I’d review more family films because of the current pandemic, but I can’t review only family films. I’m just not about that PG life.
So for a quick breather, I’ve reverted back to the classics for a hot second. This time, it’s back to 1984 and the original Terminator movie. And before you ask: no, I’ve never seen it before. Shoot me. Hehehe.
I’m sure that the majority of people my age and above have seen this already, so I won’t go into the specifics of a synopsis. I would like to point out however that the special effects in this movie are obviously very dated. Unlike when this happens in newer features, I can forgive that. In this day and age, there’s literally no excuse for poor visual effects in a movie. The technology we have today doesn’t allow for an excuse. What’s great about The Terminator though is how its below average effects almost add to the charm of the film. It’s as if its effects act as a time capsule; not only are the hair and make up unmistakably 80s, but so are they. Bonus points here go to the overtly unconvincing, creepy, robotic Arnold Schwarzenegger head.
Thus far, I’ve gone without even mentioning Linda Hamilton. Although I’d already seen her in Children of the Corn, that movie left a lot to be desired. After this, I just want to be her. If I was alive in 1984, she’d have definitely been to me what Gal Gadot and Brie Larson are to today’s young girls.
Not gonna lie to you, I only watched the first instalment of this franchise so I could watch its more critically acclaimed sequel. But I’m very glad I did.
The Terminator is a good movie in its own right, but sadly it has made me want to watch every movie in the compendium… and I hear that’s a bad idea.
The Terminator is available to stream on Netflix UK.
