Movie #122 2020: Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)

Forgetting Sarah Marshall is one of those movies that I just never had any interest in watching. Even when I watched it, I wasn’t interested in watching it. But, one Friday morning, it was my girlfriend’s turn to choose a movie… and she chose Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Like a good wife, I obliged, and sat down to watch.

I never knew why I was so reluctant to see this film. It has a great cast, including stars like Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis and the ever-funny Russell Brand. It’s a comedy; sure, I love dramatic films and thrillers more than any other, but I love to laugh!

In the end, I narrowed it down to one thing. I was so over people around me saying ”YOU SOUND LIKE YOU’RE FROM LONDON!” in a shitty attempt at an English accent that it put me off the entire thing.

Somehow, when I watched the movie, I ended up timing my bathroom break juuuust right so I missed that line. Hallelujah! That made my experience with this film much better.

Anyway, less of my life story. Let me just say this: it is actually quite funny! I wouldn’t say that it was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen, nor did every joke land. However, some of it really was chuckle-worthy, specifically the one liners delivered by Russell Brand. He is such an expert at improvisation that you have to applaud how intelligent he is. Definitely the funniest person in the film.

The plot of this movie isn’t the most original thing ever either. A guy breaks up with a woman who is way out of his league, she dates someone else, the guy bumps into her and gets jealous. Said guy then finds himself another girl (who, for the record, is way out of his league too, as they always are on TV), and falls for her. The whole thing script wraps up just as you’d expect it to… but I’ll not spoil it just in case you’re one of the few who doesn’t see the predictable ending coming.

I did have another gripe with this movie in that its run time is to long. Bear in mind I did watch the extended version, but after some research I found out that it was only six minutes longer than the theatrical version, which lasts for 111 minutes. Sadly, I think this is a movie that could have done with some fine tuning on its editing, and a solid 105 would have done the trick.

What this movie is perfect for however is the scenario in which I watched it. You want an easy watch with a couple of laughs before noon? This hits the nail on the head. So why not?

Forgetting Sarah Marshall is available to stream on Sky Cinema and NowTV.
